Morristown receives Municipal League Award for Excellence in Recreation Facilities

When Morristown officials cut the ribbon on Morristown Landing last month, they celebrated the culmination of a city project decades in the making.

In recognition of the efforts made by the City of Morristown to improve recreation opportunities and quality of life in our community, the Tennessee Municipal League (TML) is presenting Morristown with an award for Excellence in Recreation Facilities. The award will be presented later this month at the TML Annual Conference in Nashville.

Morristown leadership had long held the goal of opening a new community center with amenities that would contribute to the health, wellness, and quality of life for citizens. Following a series of public meetings with staff and citizens, officials began planning and designing a facility that would provide opportunities for athletics and fitness as well as provide community space.

The City worked with LOSE Design, PATH Construction, and Bur-Wil Construction to design and construct a new community and event center, breaking ground in 2021. The result of combined efforts was Morristown Landing, a 115,000-square-foot facility featuring multi-use athletic courts, a walking track, a large aquatic facility, fitness center, climbing walls, and various meeting and event spaces. A splash pad outside the facility was made possible by the Morristown Rotary Club. Morristown officially opened in 2023 under the management of Sports Facilities Company. Despite delays in supplies and construction created by the pandemic, Morristown was able to bring the project in under budget.

Morristown Landing is already proving to be a valuable community investment. It has played host to multiple sports tournaments and community events. It is establishing itself as a hub for family fitness and fun. Memberships have exceeded their first year goal and staff is excited to continue to welcome new faces to the facility.

Each year the Tennessee Municipal League honors cities throughout the state for overall excellence, improvement, specific outstanding programs, or department accomplishments.  The City of Morristown is proud to be among the cities chosen for this honor.
