Barbara C. "Sami" Barile was elected Mayor of Morristown on May 1, 2007, and was sworn into office on May 7. Two Bibles were used in her swearing in - one which belonged to her late father, the Rev. Donald T. Olson, and the other belonging to her mother, Evelyn Hollenberg.
Sami has a long history of service to Morristown and its citizens, having served as a volunteer with a number of organizations and as Executive Director of Morristown/Hamblen Keep America Beautiful System.
From 1982 - 1986, she was co-chair of Rose Center's Mountain Makins' Festival. She served as chair of the Rose Service Guild in 1986. She served as Hamblen County's Projects co-chair for then-Gov. Lamar Alexander's Tennessee Homecoming '86. In 1990, she became chairman of the Board of Directors of Rose Center. During her tenure as Board Chair, she led the group in raising $75,000, meeting the requirements of a 2:1 matching grant from the State of Tennessee which allowed for major repairs to the 1892-era building.
In 1989, Sami became Executive Director of Morristown/Hamblen Keep America Beautiful System, a position she held for more than ten years. Under her direction, KAB won several state and national awards, began a Christmas Tree Recycling program, began the Recycle Morristown program, and began partnering with the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation on a Household Hazardous Waste Collection. At the time of her retirement, was recognized with Keep America Beautiful, Inc.'s Professional Leadership Award, the Morristown Area Chamber of Commerce's Presidential Citation, and was recognized as Woman of the Year by Girls, Inc.
In 1991, Sami was instrumental in bringing together representatives of the City of Morristown, Hamblen County, business and industry and KAB volunteers to design, educate for, and implement one of the nation's first countywide house-to-house recycling programs which included rural areas. As the spokesperson for the Recycling Task Force, she has spoken about the recycling program at state, national and international conferences.
Sami has served on the Hamblen County-Morristown Solid Waste Board, the Habitat for Humanity Board of Directors, the Morristown Cemetery Restoration Committee and the City of Morristown Tree Board. She was appointed to the Morristown Regional Planning Commission and Board of Zoning Appeals in 2002, and continues to serve on those organizations as Mayor.
Sami has been a founding board member of the Recycling Marketing Cooperative for Tennessee, the Smoky Mountain Resource Conservation and Development Council, and Clean Islands International.
Sami and her husband Pete have three grown children, two daughters-in-law and two sets of twin grandchildren.
